We use a Zipwake KB300-S system on our Surtees 610 Gamefisher here in New Zealand, and the performance improvement is outstanding — faster planing, improved fuel efficiency, and automatic trim correction in changing sea conditions.

If you're comfortable with marine DIY work, installing a Zipwake system yourself is very achievable.

Before You Start – Tools & Preparation

Tools You’ll Likely Need

  • Drill & drill bits
  • Marine sealant (for all transom penetrations)
  • Screwdrivers
  • Measuring tape & straight edge
  • Masking tape
  • Crimping tools
  • Multimeter (recommended)

Pre-Installation Checks

  • Ensure the transom is flat where interceptors will mount
  • Confirm internal access for wiring
  • Measure carefully before drilling

Step-By-Step Zipwake Installation Overview

1. Positioning the Interceptors

  • Mount interceptors as far outward as possible
  • Keep well inside the transom edges
  • The bottom edge must sit flush with the hull bottom
  • Mounting surface must be flat and clean

Tip: Dry fit and mark drill points before sealing.

2. Drilling & Mounting

  • Drill mounting holes using supplied template
  • Apply marine sealant to all penetrations
  • Secure firmly without over-torquing

3. Wiring the System

  • Run cables cleanly and avoid sharp bends
  • Connect ignition power so system turns on/off with engine
  • Secure wiring away from heat and moving parts

4. Installing the Control Panel

  • Mount in a visible helm position
  • Avoid direct spray zones
  • Follow torque specifications

5. Programming & Initial Setup

  • Complete calibration prompts
  • Set pitch control preferences
  • Configure roll control (if applicable)
  • Adjust low-speed settings for trolling

Trolling Tip: If you troll regularly, program the system not to operate at very low speeds to prevent constant adjustment.

Common Zipwake Installation Mistakes

  • Mounting on an uneven transom surface
  • Not sealing drilled holes correctly
  • Installing interceptors too far inward
  • Forgetting ignition wiring
  • Incorrect hull alignment
